Heart CT calcium scan: A new service available for Mercer Medicine patients

Posted on May 14, 2026

Mercer Medicine now offers heart CT calcium scans for established patients as part of its continued commitment to preventive heart care and early detection.

A heart CT calcium scan checks for calcium buildup in the arteries that supply blood to your heart. This test can detect early signs of heart disease, often before symptoms appear.

Over time, calcium, fat and other substances can build up in the heart’s arteries, forming plaque. Too much plaque can increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Why get a calcium score scan?

This simple scan can help your provider better understand your heart health and determine whether preventive treatment may be needed. Benefits of the scan include:

  • Find problems early: Detect signs of heart disease before symptoms begin.
  • Know your risk: Better understand your risk for a heart attack or stroke.
  • Plan next steps: Results can help guide recommendations for treatment, lifestyle changes or medication.
  • Quick and painless: The scan is fast, noninvasive and requires no recovery time.

Who should consider this scan?

You may benefit from a CT calcium scan if you are between the ages of 40 and 70 or have a higher risk for heart disease but do not currently have symptoms. Risk factors may include:

  • Family history of heart disease
  • Current or past tobacco use
  • High cholesterol, diabetes or high blood pressure
  • Being overweight
  • Physical inactivity

How do I schedule a scan?

Heart CT calcium scans are available for Mercer Medicine patients at a self-pay rate. Talk with your Mercer Medicine provider to see if this test is right for you based on your age, risk factors and overall heart health.
